SCAM NOTIFICATION 8-15-08
Friday, 15 August 2008
scam alert.jpgIt was reported earlier today that a member received a phone call at home from someone pretending to be a River Valley Credit Union employee. The caller even used a real employees name.  The caller asked for debit card and all other credit card numbers and the 3 digit security code on the back, explaining that the credit union was offering a new credit card with really low interest rates.

DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS SCAM PHONE CALL. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WOULD WE CALL YOU AND ASK FOR YOUR CURRENT CREDIT CARD OR ACCOUNT INFORMATION. IF YOU DO RECEIVE THIS KIND OF CALL, TRY TO GET A PHONE NUMBER FROM THE CALLER. EVEN IF THEY HANG UP OR REFUSE TO GIVE A CALL BACK NUMBER, BE SURE TO CALL YOUR NEAREST RIVER VALLEY OFFICE IMMEDIATELY AND LET THEM KNOW ABOUT THE SCAM CALL THAT YOU RECEIVED.

Illinois Scam Comes to Vermont
Friday, 08 August 2008
This scam is potentially targeting credit union members across the country. CUNA  (Credit Union National Association) was alerted to this on August 6th by
a credit union in Illinois and today the same email has shown up in Vermont. This is a two part scam. Part one is a somewhat legitimate looking phishing email (see below) that, compared to most, is fairly well written and attractively presented with colored boxes around it (which have been removed below). Part two is the link (also removed) that takes you to a very credible spoof website of CUNA's Strategic Services page where similar information to the email directs the victim to complete a form. Presumably this is where the victim will enter their personal information, although we have not done so, as this was sufficient to prove it was a scam. What makes this scam even more dangerous is that the link in the phishing email points to the website of what appears to be a marketing and design firm in Houston, TX called Deampod.com. It is likely that this is also a fraudulent website, set up to further trap unsuspecting victims by reassuring them that a legitimate company is behind the CUNA promotion. The lack of a telephone number on the site, and only one email address being provided on their "Contact Us" page, makes the likelihood much higher that this is a fraudulent website. This elaborate and well created scam is significantly more advanced than most phishing attempts and represents a threat to any credit union member who receives the phishing email. We strongly encourage you to bring this to the attention of your employees and members. Our report to CUNA was the second that they have received and they are working the problem from their end ... more information will be made available as we have it. BELOW IS A COPY OF THE SCAM E-MAIL TEXT:

MORE THAN ENERGY LOANS
Tuesday, 15 July 2008
It's on everyone's mind right now. "How am I going to make it through the winter with the fuel prices going out of sight?"  It's not too late to take some action. Maybe you need to convert to wood, or maybe you want to pre-buy your fuel. Either way, an energy loan from River Valley Credit Union can make it happen. Right now River Valley  is authorized to write loans for fuel like oil, gas, wood and pellets as well as heating systems, wood stoves, pellet or corn stoves and more. Don't wait until there is a chill in the air, call us now and ask about an Energy Loan at River Valley.
